What causes too much fuel to damage the engine? I was under the impression too little fuel will lead to increased temperatures; causing damage.
Is it because too much fuel in the cylinder could lead to hydrolock if not fully combusted?

Diesels are in some ways the opposite of petrol engines. Leaner makes it cooler, richer makes it hotter.
As discussed in the course, with a diesel engine we are always operating on the lean side of stoich. When we're leaner than stoich, as we add fuel the combustion temperature increases.
