Hi,

This is my first post here, but I have been visiting this forum a lot.

I have done some recordings from my number 1 knock sensor on my built 2JZ-GTE and have a noise I can't recognize, I am wondering if it is a bearing going bad or if it is normal cumbustion. I can only hear it in the recordings when I put some load on the engine. There is a clacking/rattle noise. There is no noise when i decelerate in gears or when i keep a constant load on the engine.

This recording has been done on the road, and there is also a ground loop noise in the background.

I hope that someone can take a listen and comment.

If you can, stop using it, NOW! If it is a problem, it'll just get worse, if it isn't, you won't loose anthing but time.

First thing would be to drain the oil and look for shiny debris in the oil - if there is some there, time to be a little concerned. Next thing would be to remove the oil filter and open it up and check for metallic debris in the filter element - if there's some there, time to be more concerned.

Have a search for "oil testing" or "oil analysis" in your country, and arrange to have an oil sample checked - if you don't find anything, contact your local heavy machinery dealers as many companies, I know CAT and Hitachi do, require samples to be sent for testing as part of their servicing agreement, and they should be able to advise you where to send it - maybe even send it for you with a batch of their own test samples.

Should they also confirm the presence of bearing material - they'll be able to tell what it is - it will be time to drop the sump and visually check the bearing shells for wear or damage, although I'd do that before the oil analysis.

Thanks for your quick answer Gord, the car is in winter storage for the moment. It hasn't been in use since I recorded that in november 2020.

I will drain the oil, check it and also check the filter. I know a serviceman for Volvo heavy machines, maybe he can send a oil sample to analyse it.

I will post my findings here.

Thanks again - Lars
