What’s the correct base timing to set up at the crankshaft?

There isn't a correct base timing as such. The intention of setting the base timing is to ensure that the timing displayed on your laptop matches what the engine is actually receiving. Normally I'd select a base timing number that is easy to view with a timing light and one that the engine will happily run at. This is usually in the 0-15 degree range but depends on what marks are available on your front pulley/front cover.
