Thanks for clearing up the concept. Now, in applying this, where to insert the resistor? At the connector to the ECU/display logger? Do I need a separate resistor for each input without an internal pull up (thinking here of several pushbuttons on the steering wheel)?

Yes, you need a separate pull up resistor for each input signal, but they can tie to the same 5V reference voltage. Generally steering wheel buttons tie to inputs with pull ups built in, but if not, then I would probably add the pull ups at the connector going to the steering wheel -- so each button only needed two wires (signal and the common ground). Minimizes the number of wires needed in the curly cord or steering shaft connector.

Thank you sir!
