Would it be better to check ring gap with block assembled and torqued. Possibly even with torque plate added. If so what boost level/Hp would this serve. Ex) ej255 >26psi >450hp/tq

I am currently in a predicament. I have the option to buy good quality Mahle piston rings which are 85mm however my pistons are 84.5mm. I wanted to know if I could file the rings down to the required gap needed in my motor? The other option I have which I really would not like to use is to buy an inferior set of rings from Hastings which are the correct size for my piston. The piston I am currently using is BMW M50B25 84.5mm pistons, in which rings are extremely rare to come by
Provided the other dimensions are suitable - width and backspacing - you should be perfectly fine doing that. I've used oversize rings before when I couldn't find file-to-fit rings in the bore I was using.
