How do hood exit exhaust affect the rear wing performance? Is their any aerow gain to having them?
hello,
hood exits don't tend to effect rear wing performance that much and there's no one size fits all answer for this one. As with everything aero its very nuanced and position, shape, height all play a key role. generally the scuttle panel is an area of high pressure so not an ideal place for an exhaust exit. There are some good insights on the Nissan LMP1 car that used hood exit exhausts and as ever aerospace papers covering exhaust exits if you dig around online.
Hi Ted, to add to what Scott said, exhaust angle can be important, you don't want to have an exhaust shooting straight up from the hood as this will disturb the airflow over the roof and could cause some local separations which will hurt flow further downstream. What is a better approach is to angle it rearwards, with a smooth sweep into a blended panel into the hood. This way the flow can be directed along the car and the higher energy of the exhaust flow can be used to (slightly) improve the performance of devices further downstream.
