Given that solder connections are prone to cracking, could we not just use the crimp on pins to make the connections then fill with the pitying compound etc? Wouldn’t that be easier and even stronger?

I can't see why potting wires attached with crimped pins wouldn't work, but a lot of times you'd need more potting compound as the terminals would be a lot longer (therefore protruding out of the connector). It's also worth noting that by rigidly encapsulating the solder connection in epoxy, it makes it much harder for it to crack (which is due to it flexing back/forth). Finally, cheaper to solder!
