Would you be able to use a number punch ? Or would you want to stay away for it do to impact.
Depends on what it is being marked - some may be fine with carefully selected placements of LIGHTLY stamped numbers, whereas some may prone to rapid failure if it's badly placed.
If you want to mark something that's clean, sometimes indeligible markers wortk well, and there are specialised markers for engine assembly.
