I know you wanted a bespoke system but wouldn't something like phpBB (which is free btw) have been easier and just as good?

Michael, we did look at PHPbb, Vanilla and vBulletin in depth. For good or bad we went with the SilverStripe under the recommendation of our developer as integration to our LMS platform was easy, this made single sign on easy. We hope in the coming months to add features to increase usability :)
I've never heard of Vanilla, and vBulletin is an unnesscary expense when things like PHPbb, Joomla etc are free anyway.
I've just come accross another gripe but will start a new thread because this involves the entire website not just the forum.
