I’m currently in the middle of a project for my track car. I’ve had the part 3D scanned with the intention of amend certain features, splitting (due to size) and 3D printing. My issue is the scan has been sent to me which appears to be in the format of Surface solid step file which still has facets. Unfortunately I just have fusion personal license and solidworks makers so I don’t have the additional software features to make into a true solid. Is there anyway to go about this without outsourcing or purchasing full licenses?

Hi Derek,

First thought, if it's a surface body in fusion can you use the thicken tool to make it a solid?

That said, even if you have the software that can turn a mesh from a 3D scan into a solid "automatically" that's very rarely the best approach to take. In most cases I create mesh section profiles and extract entities/key geometric features from the scan to use as a reference to build my own parametric model - which I can then modify or reproduce as needed, or use it to design something else.

All of this is shown in our 3D printing course and i've covered some of these topics in past webinars.
