Hey all-
First off, love the site and courses, and podcasts, and everything HP Academy! I'm starting a custom motorcycle build, and needed to do some 3D scanning. Not knowing how much I'd need one in the future, was keen to see what results I could get from my phone and be able to put the money saved towards parts for the project. Bottom line up front, I'd say significantly better than expected results. While not to the level of an actual 3D scanner, for what I need- really just a rough framework to then add solid parametric bits into to use, I'd say it's working great. Accuracy is also better than expected. If people are interested, I'd be more than happy to make a post describing how I've figured out how to optimize a phone for getting some pretty decent 3D scan results. Pictures are of an engine scan i did, zoomed in on the intake ports, and a rear brake caliper for the motorcycle.
Let me know y'alls thoughts!
Hey Jacob,
That scan of the caliper looks really good for a phone scan.
What phone and App are you using? I'd be interested in your comments on "optimising" the phone for scanning as well.
We're about to make a video on the phone vs entry level scanner vs pro level scanner topic - so this is good timing.
iPhone 16 Pro Max, but shouldn't really matter as I don't use the LIDAR function, just photo or 3DGS w/mesh.
I attached a PDF that goes through the process I use, please let me know if you want more detail!
Mega work and a great resource for anyone else doing phone scanning and working in solidworks.
thanks for sharing
Happy to help out! I went a little light in the details regarding SolidWorks, since I know you guys mostly use Fusion, but if you want a more detailed SolidWorks post processing how to let me know and I can do that!
