The scanner I bought is tethered to the PC. The cable gets in the way as I try to move around the item being scanned.
I type in 3D scanner turntable into the internet and am saturated with options. I could care less if the table moves on it's own (motorized). Otherwise, I don't know where to start in that search. Maybe it's of no consequence what I get?
I was thinking of going to the store and picking up a kitchen turntable... then putting some targets on it? Perhaps painting it if necessary and adding targets.
The one thing I noticed is the 3D scanner branded turntables for sale look pretty small. I'm going to scan door handles to start with (a couple feet long and about 8" high).
Hey Matthew, a kitchen turntable is all we use at HPA! I just stuck some black card paper to the top because ours is glass - but painting it black would be better depending on the material - it's helpful if the top surface is nice and flat when it comes time to "clean" the scan data.
Awesome thanks for the help. I will pick one up today.
I assume any pyramid targets will work although probably better if they have the sticker targets from my 3D scanner company?
Depends on the scanner. Some work with a range of targets, some are specific. But yeah it'll help if they're the ones from the same supplier.
I went to the hardware store, bought a bearing for a kitchen turntable. Cut 26" circle out of plywood and mounted it on the bearing.
I need to paint it black yet... Or is it better to stick black construction paper to it? I assume you don't want a glossy finish>
It's a Einstar Shining 3D. I'll use the dots that came included with the scanner to accent the turn table and buy some pyramid targets.
I MUCH better like the scanner you use in the course! The software is far more advanced and it looks more comfortable to hold. This one is a bugger. It will suffice to get me up and running.
Is there a scanner software you can buy independent of the scanner? I assume not.
Also I have a 5500k white light in my office. I've been uncertain as to if I should leave it on or off when I scan.
Wow, I keep saying this. I'm so very thankful for your help! Your cutting DAYS off my study combing through YouTube and trying to pick-out the videos that are just there to promote products.
I fiddled a bunch with the turn table setup. Saving Notes here:
Turntable / Foundation: Plywood on turntable bearing (can buy at hardware store). This allowed me to do a larger turn table than the kitchen store sells. The plywood has some warp to it. It maybe more prudent to go with Pressed wood / countertop laminate of some sort.
Finish: Finish, I painted it with oil based / enamel paint. It was a matte finish but turned out a bit glossy. This didn't work well. I think I may try again with chalkboard paint for a flatter / duller black finish. I ended up putting foam poster board on it in black matte finish. This worked well but it's kind of janky as wants to slide off. I think the chalk paint would be better but have yet to try.
Targets: I bought pyramid targets. These aren't well suited for a flat plane (the turntable). Also kind of pointless to buy them if you have a 3D printer, you can print them then stick the targets to them. I eventually placed a bunch of the 10mm / 6mm reflective targets all over the turntable surface. This worked like a dream.
I want to test the chalkboard finish on the turn table. This next time I'll put even MORE targets on the surface as well. It seems to me as there's a optimal density and randomness to placing them. Places where the target density is lowest on my current set seems to be where the scanner looses track.
