What would happen if you installed your oil control ring upside down? And would you still have good compression?
Not exactly sure what you mean by upside down. I think most oil ring packs usually contain three rings ( two oil rings and one expander in between them) and they are not usually directional from what I have seen, but that may not always be the case. However, if one would install them wrong, compression should not really be affected until the other rings would wear out due to possible lubrication related issues. One might also experience some smoke from the exhaust as the oil would likely work it's way past the other rings if the oil rings are not working properly.
I can't see it being a problem, either, unless the expander was incorrectly fitted with the ends over-lapped, rather than correctly butted up.
Off hand, can't recall any oil rails being specificly oriented, but it may be the case for some, with a bias to the twist.
If it's just a concern that one might be up-side down, it won't affect compression, that's primarily down to the top ring.
