Technically speaking, how exactly does the battery smooth the output from the Alternator? Diodes allow voltage to flow in one direction. Can you get more into specifics of why they do this and why it’s important please?

Fransisco, the normal car alternator design uses the first of the poly-phase circuits.
There are some specialist dual-voltage alternators that have both 12V AND 24V outputs (or other voltages as required, eg 12V for battery charging and 110/220VAC output for emergency generators), as illustrated by the later schematic with the dual secondary circuits.
