Is there an easy or straightforward way to strip wire insulation at a mid-length position of a wire? The most obvious way looks to be cutting the wire circumferentially at 2 locations with a stripping tool then making a careful longitudinal cut.
In the oem harness I have, i noticed that any mid-wire splice does a mid-wire strip vs. cutting the wire and crimping all the ends together.

I only do the mid-wire splice with modifying an existing harness where I don't have an extra cm of wire length to do a splice (or can't replace the pins in a connector near the splice. On new harneses, I just do a normal splice.
I use the same technique as you; cut the ends using my wire strippers, and slice longitudinally with an x-acto blade.
If you have sufficient extra length in the harness, I would probably just cut the wire and do a normal parallel splice. That way would be much faster and easier.
