with star point grounding, why is there not a concern about transient voltage spikes, considering all current is sharing the same path back to the battery from the engine? I read an article from Davis Electronics a while ago emphasizing the importance of separating power and ground paths for clean and dirty devices, is that something just handled by how modern ecus are installed so it doesn't need to be talked about anymore?

You may be conflating two things there?

While it is definitely good practice to try and separate "noisy" circuits from "clean", with the latter being used for ECU sensors and other voltage sensitive equipement, the "Star"ground, and power for that matter, can partially neutralise the affects of those - and also removes the problem of variations in the Potential Differences (PD) that may occur on earth, and power, wiring paths.

This is because if all the relevant grounds, or power sources, are tied together then any voltage fluctuations/spikes will affect all of them equally - they're still there but the variations will have a minimal affect.
