question, would there be any gains to be had after having change the AFR if we where to play with the timing?
Yes it's quite possible. As I mentioned in the webinar I was only focussing on the AFR. There is however a relationship between the two as AFR also affects combustion temperature and flame speed. You'll often find for example that under WOT operation a richer AFR may allow slightly more timing before the onset of knock.
