Just a note. The crank position sensor does not have to be on the cam shaft. The ECM input for it could easily be mathematically manipulated by the ECM software / firmware. It may be easier to put it on the cam shaft, and this may be the norm, but this is not a necessity for the designer.
Do you mean they could be placed on a pulley/sprocket, a jack-shaft, a dummy distributor housing, etc? Those have all been used at different times by different manufacturers.
If not, would you please elaborate? Remember, the "camshaft" sensor is required to correctly align the crankshaft and camshaft to ensure they're not 360 crank' degrees out when fuel and/or ignition is in full sequential mode. With batch/semi-sequential it isn't a requirement.
