What does it mean when he talks about cylinder volume??
When the piston is at the bottom of its stroke it is furthest away from the cylinder head, so a larger volume of space is available between the piston top and the cylinder head.
As the piston moves towards the cylinder head, the cylinder volume available for air/fuel to occupy shrinks.
The smallest cylinder volume is available when the piston is at top dead center, which is the closest the piston gets to the head.

Cylinder volume is, quite literally, the volume of air in the cylinder. It will vary with the position of the piston in the bore, maximim at Bottom Dead Centre, least at Top Dead Centre. Cylinder swept volume is the volume the piston displaces as it moves in the cylinder - bore x pi/4 x stoke, and engine swept volume is that times the number of cylinders.
