We're tuning an M130 GPA package on a 1986 560 SL Mercedes. Trying to set CRIP with ignition locked down at 0, timing light set at 0, the ignition timing moves with engine speed all over the place, from -10 to +35. It's not steady as I'm used to seeing. I tried setting every ignition setting in the package to 10 degrees, but I still get the same ignition change with engine rpm. Mag Ref, hall Sync, no errors on ref or sync, cycle lock, 36 -1 ref wheel. Ignition 1 output for all 8 cylinders, triggering a MSD 6 Mini (because I need to use the stock distributor). Sync is in the distributor, and I've tried rotor indexing (advance weights free), and the distributor locked with the same result. The Ref missing tooth is about 110 deg before TDC.
I would worry about the MSD working with a dialback timing light. I don't see the MSD 6 Mini on their website, so I'm guessing you are using MSD Ultra 6A (small form factor) with no internal timing control. The instructions for that mention incompatibility with digital or dial-back timing lights. You might need to use an old-school inductive light (because it will trigger on the first pulse of the multi-spark). The multi-spark function doesn't work above 3000 RPM, so does the timing stay constant above that speed?
With a typical ignitor, you can see a slight change with RPM that is adjusted out using the Ignition Driver Delay value.
Correct, MSD Ultra 6A, no internal timing control.
Old school inductive light = same result.
I have not gone above 2500 because timing shoots above 40 deg
I tried Ignition Driver Delay of 50 us to 100 us. Same result.
Thank you for thinking of options to try.
I am pretty confident you have the Ignition Driver Firing Edge set wrong, this should be rising edge.
Also check that your coil charge time is a single value. MSDs don't dwell.
We installed a Bosch 0 227 100 124 ignition driver, to the MSD coil and CRIP now works and holds the ignition from advancing.
No idea how it advances to 40+ with MSD....
Adjusted Ignition Coil Charge Time Main to .1 ms and fixed the problem. Advance stays locked in CRIP mode.
Thank you to Motec for the following:
Ignition Coil Charge Time Main - table with 0-20volts, all values 3.0ms
Ignition Driver Current - 20.0 mA
Ignition Driver Delay - 30 us
Ignition Driver Firing Edge - Rising Edge
