Hi Christopher, there's two ways of dealing with this situation. The first situation is where you've calculated the theoretical airflow through the engine based on engine capacity and engine rpm, and then measured the actual airflow at this same point. If you know the measured airflow and the theoretical airflow then you can calculate the VE of the engine. For example if the theoretical airflow is 500 CFM and the actual airflow measures 440 CFM then the VE is equal to 440 / 500 = 0.88 or 88%
On the other hand if you have the VE and you know the theoretical airflow through the engine, you can calculate the actual airflow. For example if the theoretical airflow is 500 CFM and the VE is 88% then the actual airflow is 500 * 0.88 = 440 CFM.
