Hello everyone!

I can't recall if this was touched on in the tuning courses or not, but I don't know what gear / gears to tune the car in. I'm getting ready to take my car to the dyno to tune my own standalone ECU for the first time, but I wanted to know what gear to run the engine in first. Do I tune in the highest gear there is? Or the gear that's the closest to 1:1 ratio?

Thank you!

Traditionally, as close to 1:1 as possible.

Might depend on the the rolling road though, it will probably have a maximum upper speed limit.

As greenamex says, as close to 1:1 is the general rule, 4th in a 5 speed, 5th in a 6 speed.

Basically, what you are trying to do is have as small a torque multiplier (final gearing) as possible, whilst having a sensible wheel speed, as tyres can, will and have failed on rolling roads.

If it's a hub dyno, it changes slightly as they have an upper hub speed limit. They will usually hold more torque, so you can use a lower gear as they're not traction-limited, but you might come into a torque limit if you are hitting some big torque numbers, depending on the dyno
