I will be going through an L96 6.0 engine that had issues with detonation on the left bank, and plan to just go ahead and put new bearings and rings in the bottom end at a bare minimum. My question is regarding measuring main/rod bearing clearances and main cap bores -- the main and rod bolts in this engine are TTY. So from what I understand, I will need to use 3 sets of main and rod bolts: 1 to measure the bores, 1 to measure bearing clearances, and 1 for final assembly. Is it acceptable to use the old bolts for the purpose of measuring, or does it have to be new every time? I thought about just getting main studs so that I can reuse them, but from what I understand installing main studs requires line boring. It's an iron block, if that changes anything.
