Hey all im doing a timing belt and water replacement on a 2007 Acura mdx and prior to removal of the timing belt covers and crank pulley it is required to set to TDC. Looking at procedures off Prodemand it shows line up crank pulley mark with arrow on timing cover and #1 Lh cam sprocket mark with timing cover mark through the inspection hole. Upon trying to line up the #1 cam gear and crankshaft i found a consistent pattern showing #2 then #6 on LH cam gear when lining up and rotating crank 360 degrees each time. Looking at a used gam gear picture i can see the #6 Cam mark is ahead of #1 mark by 7 teeth and #2 Cam mark is 15 teeth behind #1 mark. Could the Timing really be off by a whole cylinder without causing engine to seize up or even misfire? And is there any way i could tell if the Camshaft advanced or retarded so i can set it closest to its original position before removal? Id like to prevent the valves and pistons kissing if my camshaft is not lined up right when i remove the belt but i figure ill set it at #6 mark on the cam gear since its closest to #1 mark and adjust when i get the belt off. Would just like some second opinions since ive never seen timing this far out, Thanks guys!
