hello,

i have a friend who is getting his harley tuned soon. he noticed his iat is reading very high to the tune of 200 degrees around cold start. how would this effect the tune or how the tuner is going to do his job ? i have tuned over 50 bikes but never encountered this situation as of yet and would appreciate some advice. thank you.

First, is the value real? When you say 200 degF at cold start (this would imply that it can't be heat soak), and ambient temp is much less than 200 degF.

Can you use another temperature measuring device to confirm -- for example an IR temp gun, or another sensor?

If the problem is a bad sensor (unlikely), wiring problem (possible) or a bad calibration (more likely), then you should be able to fix it.

So if the value isn't real don't waste any time tuning without correcting this, or disabling the sensor and using a reasonable default (like the current ambient tmep).

the value is definitely false. he already replaced the sensor. I have been walking him through the process of testing the wiring. the current ecm settings are stock besides some fuel adjustments as far as I know (I'm not the one tuning the bike unfortunately). i know the problem needs to be resolved by him and his tuner but i was just curious what this sort of incorrect reading would cause the vehicle to do. my thoughts are retard the timing and possibly making it go lean do to the air not being dense i would think the ecm would consider the less air density would need less fuel to accomplish the target afr. the vehicle is being reflash tuned so it is limited in its capabilities
