Hi,
I'm new to the tuning scene.
Recently I build a M111 engine (Mercedes 4cyl.), custom pistons, cams, flywheel, etc.
Then I installed an EMU black (Ecumaster) and everything is running very nicely.
However, my tach and coolant temp gauge is not working. It is a stock, CAN controlled dash.
I bought the HPA CAN course, which is a great help to get started. But before I dig in, I would like to know if I need to wire my factory ecu back in, or can I 'snif' the network without it?

You need to sniff a working network to determine what may be required of your EMU Black. I would work with a car that has the stock ECU.
I agree, sniffing a stock vehicle will generally give you better results as some communications will likely fail or not occur without a key component like the ECU present and functioning normally.
