I am building an endurance race car using a 1999 Porsche Boxster as the platform. Per the rules, I must retain the 2.5L M96.20 flat 6 engine. This is a complete ground up build so the factory wiring is being removed and only what is necessary is being added back.

The decision to go to an aftermarket ECU has already been made so this isn't a debate of whether to retain the factory DME or not but more as to which aftermarket ECU fits my needs best. My experience is with a Haltech 2500 so I was considering a Haltech R3 to handle ECU and PDM duties but am open to others. All things being equal I'd stick with Haltech since that's what I'm familiar with but wasn't sure if there was a specific reasons related to this engine to use something else.

This is not a common engine to run an aftermarket ECU and I understand why but nonetheless, that is the plan unless there is some huge obstacle I'm not seeing. There are a few questions I have that I want to make sure any ECU would address and get thoughts on what ECU would work for my situation best.

Would appreciate any insights or recommendations.

Variable Cam

The motor runs "Variocam" which is simply a switched on/off two position variable cam setup of the intake cams only. There are two cam position sensors (one per bank). In the Haltech world this seems to be handled as 'Cam Control Switched' but I am not seeing a provision for a 2nd cam position sensor under that. I only see a provision for a second cam position sensor under the full variable cam control area, of which this is not. I understand only one will be used as the Home sensor but I would like to have the provision for the 2nd sensor for diagnostic purposes (just as the stock DME has).

Coil Packs

The engine is stock coil on plug. The coils are 3 wire but as I understand it some VAG 3 wire coils do not have an internal ignitor and need an external igniter separate from the ECU. I do see a continuity test to check this on the coil but in the stock engine I don't see something separate from the DME/ECU that would handle this. This is new to me as the first and only other aftermarket I installed had ignitors in the coils.

Fuel Injectors

I plan to use aftermarket Injector Dynamic injectors because I've used them before, have the data on them, and they have worked well. Might be overkill but at least I know what I'm getting vs guessing at the OEM injector parameters. I'd be happy to use the OEM injectors but can't find much data on them.
