Evening all…

I have a problem, it’s a very annoying problem. I keep breaking crank pulleys..

Engine is a built 1.6 ecoboost. Mahle pistons, bridgeway rods, stock crank, kind bearings..

The whole rotating assembly was balanced with the flywheel and clutch cover when it was built.

Engine is makes good power, 400hp plus.. but I can’t keep the OEM harmonic damper in one piece. The latest OEM one lasted 4 full bore pulls. They are cracking on the webs.

The question is why? And where to look for a solution. Neither ATI or flyidine make a damper for this engine..

It’s root cause I want to understand. Hoping some has been in a similar position.. obviously when the pulleys fail, the engine timing drifts.. so I need to sort this out.

If you are making significantly more power on a lightened rotating assembly the instantaneous crank acceleration could be near an order of magnitude higher, the lightening could also have exacerbated a tortional harmonic placing significantly more load on the pulley.

As a short term solution you might consider having two parts fabricated /machined and pouring urethane as a damping element. Probably worth talking to ATI about adapting or making one to suit long term. Some companies won't play ball but there will usually be someone who will accept payment for engineering/trade time and manufacture of something that becomes a part number for them.
