Hi everyone,
I’m planning to build a classic Chevy C/K pickup for off-road and overlanding use.
Due to the regulations in my country and the vehicle registration documents, I’m not legally allowed to install a V8 engine on this truck. Because of this limitation, I’m considering installing a modern inline-6 engine with fuel injection instead.
My main question is:
Can a modern naturally aspirated inline-6 engine provide good off-road capability and decent acceleration for difficult terrain, as well as reliable performance for nature trips and camping use, on a classic Chevy C/K platform?
The vehicle will be used for:
I’m mainly concerned about:
I’d really appreciate any advice or real-world experience regarding inline-6 engine choices, setup considerations, and whether this platform can meet my expectations without a V8.
Thank you very much for your help.
That's a shame that you can't fit a V8 however there are plenty of inline 6 engines that would more than fit the bill. For example both the Nissan Patrol and Toyota 80/100 Series Landcruiser have used 6 cylinder engines - The Toyota 1FZ-FE and Nissan TB48. There's also a healthy selection of aftermarket parts if you want more power. Both of these engines are designed specifically for offroad vehicles though with a focus on bottom end torque. You could also consider the Australian Ford Barra 4 litre inline 6 too.
