Why do people use a longer wheel base on one side of a rear wheel drive car for oval track racing and how does it effect the handling?
As I understand it, it's to add, or subtract, rear steer.
If the outside is longer, with the rear axle tweaked a little, it will help turn the vehicle into the corner and, in some instances, increase the side air pressure on the vehicle which gives more cornering speed.
If the outside is shorter, it will keep the body straighter as the turned in rear axle will be accepting the slip angle, or the rear 'drift'. This is sometimes used where keeping the vehicle 'straight' in the corner as it allows the aero' downforce to work better.
