I would like to know if there are a category of common incorrectly installed components that you have seen/heard people do? Are some components more critical than others e.g. crank, camshaft lifters, flywheel, valve springs?
In my experience the most wrongly used parts are spark plugs and valve springs)))
Plain bearing shells (mains and B/E) - as a 'prentice I'd seen many mechanics, including "senior ones", oil their seats before placing the bearings on the oil film - WORSE, there was one who would use loctite to "stop them spinning", FFS!
Cam belt covers - not fitting them to save weight. Lost count of how many cars blew up after a trip into the gravel.
Interesting question. We talk about this a lot in terms of external engine parts and electronics.
In terms of the engine build itself, I'd say piston to wall and ring gaps.
Then in terms of external items that impact the engine rebuild, the biggest thing is not replacing parts after a failure i.e. oil cooler, VVT components, turbo etc. which then dumps debris back into the repaired engine and damages it.
