Debate y preguntas relacionadas con el curso Fundamentos de la fabricación en el automovilismo.
Hello,
I am beginning with engine building, fabrication and vechile maintance. I wanted to ask about SMAW welding in automotive - would you recommend it? Why yes/why no?
Usually it will not be used, other than for in field repairs where having a MIG/TIG setup wouldn't work, or would be inconvenient. It is in most cases easier to get a good weld using a MIG, than with SMAW unless you have a lot of experience. The scratch start nature of the SMAW process can make it harder to get a clean start to the weld, and then you have to be careful of maintaining the arc gap whilst the rod is being consumed. You also have to deal with the slag that is generated and make sure that it doesn't go where you do not want it.
The main places that I could see SMAW being used in an Automotive workshop would be heavy metal fabrication work, like bull bars or solid axles.
