new tuner fish in tucson arizona

i am new to efi tuning and wanted to educate myself primary to work on and improve the tune on my 1997 chevrolet camaro z28.

this car is challenging because it is the one year of obd2 pcm that is different from both the pre-1997 obd1 pcms and the post-1997 obd2 that is only supported for tuning by the Jet DST (formerly known as Tunercat) software.

the car is running a 400hp 383 LT1 with a mail order tune. the car runs, but i think it runs too rich and gets poor gas mileage (10mpg around town), idles too high, and regularly throws 0507, 0133 and 0153 codes that i am convinced are coming from a tune that isn't right. i want to learn this stuff and be able to fix it myself without continually sending the pcm out never getting the best result.

i am hoping that somewhere in here there is going to be some courses on what software tuning tools are available, how to configure and use them, etc. - while i agree that learning the fundamentals are really important, none of that will help me much if i don't have tools to use that will allow me to do what you are showing in the videos.

i don't have access to a dyno, so all my tuning work will be done in the garage and on the road.

i am also interested to learn if it is possible to learn what things to tune/change to address specific problems (such as the trouble codes i mentioned above). i'm sure it isn't as simple as "for XXXX code, you need to edit the blah blah blah table and increase/decrease a, b, c, d", but that is what i am here to try and figure out.

Have you looked into a MegaSquirt 2 system. They work well with upgrading older American Muscle to EFI.
