What software and hardware do you recommend to tune E46 M54 engine ?

that would depend i personally use aftermarket ecus like Link, motec, and so on.
so i guess it comes down to what you feel most comfortable using and can get the best support for and your level of tuning ability,
The only ECU I have found that will allow you keep all the car functions is by a Swedish ECU manufacturer - Maxx ECU.
I have an E39 so I will probably use this when the time comes.
