If you want to deactivate cylinders for fuel economy your engine needs to have been developed for it from the factory. So that includes for example some VW/Audi engines, as well as GM and Chrysler engines. You can't just turn off a cylinder or two. The engine will be unbalanced and not make any power. Cylinder deactivation systems deactivate the valves and the injectors, and have special software to run the engine in deactivation mode.
