Hey all, as the title states, I have some concerns about oil pressure in my newly built LSVTEC (Integra B18A1 block + GSR head). GSR oil pump brand new from Honda. NA street car build, 10.8:1 comp, Skunk2Tuner2 cams.
I used proper tools to measure my journals and bearings (King XP) and originally spec'd my engine out to:
Mains:
Fast forward to first drive and I end up with 6psi warm idle oil pressure using 5w30. Shut it down and realize that I'm missing an oil restrictor in the block deck. I tear the head off and insert the missing restrictor. Got to 9psi on 5w30 this time. Tried 10w40, got to 12psi.
So I drop the oil pan etc and inspect the crank. Looks good. I replace the bottom halves of all five main bearings with std bearing halves (so they are now all split shells). Now I'm up to maybe 13psi warm idle.
Cold start is about 80psi.
Warm cruise:
2000rpm 32-34psi
3000rpm 48-50psi
By 4500rpm I'm at 70psi.
The oil pressure rockets up with throttle input, the pump is obviously healthy. The engine sounds great and is super eager and responsive. I seated the rings well which I'm proud of (hard to do here in NYC).
I know I built on the loose side, which was on purpose because it was my first engine build and I wanted to be safe-ish and also be happy revving to 8500rpm all the time. My fear is that I went too far and will end up with bearing damage or wipe my cams or something because of the idle pressure being low. I don't mind if this isn't a 300k mile engine. I just don't want it to die at 5,000 miles.
Anyone have words of wisdom? The facebook B series page is full of... not the smartest people in the world (though there are gems in there!). I'd love advice from someone who's built more than one engine. Should I try 20w50? Should I do something to my oil pump? Am I just screwed? Or maybe I'm totally fine?
We are ok with 5psi at idle hot with many dry-sump race engines. I wouldn't worry, but you could raise your idle speed, or use at 50wt oil.
Thanks for your response, David. Does what you like to see in a dry sump setup cross over to be meaningful in a standard oil pump street car situation? I've been told that race cars can run thick oils and have loose clearances because they don't need to worry about idle protection (i.e. sitting in traffic for long periods of time) and thousands of cold starts over the years.
