Custom Wiring Harness: Where To Start? [UPDATE 306]

Where do you start a large, daunting wiring project? With planning of course, but what should that entail?

In this 'Today at HPA' update we take a look at how the wiring requirements were broken down for the FJ40/BF42 V8 engine conversion project. This includes making sure you know the inputs and outputs you require in order to understand what ECU is best for you and your requirements. So, so SO many people ask us 'what is the best ECU' and this explanation helps to show that there is no such single, simple answer as what YOU need, what WE need here and what your neighbour who still hasn't returned your Oscilloscope after 4 weeks needs for entirely different projects and budgets.

Andre shows how he has listed everything out and also broken it down so he knows exactly what he needs, the drive by wire (dbw) throttle body system for example not being one item on the list, but 6 in order to cover the half bridges, position sensor and analog voltage inputs to make sure we know everything's position as well as the ability to position it.

Also discussed are connector and current sharing considerations where you need to check the pinouts and make sure that you are allowing for the correct size wire as well as not overloading your connector terminals where applicable.

We touch on the electric handbrake and wiper motor in relation to bench testing, noting the handbrake sourced from an Audi wasn't as straight forward an option as we could have gone with, but it was also nice to deal with something a little different.

WEBINAR INFO: This [UPDATE] came right before members only webinar '306 | Basic Wiring Fault Finding' which can be found via Gold Membership on the HPA website.

Wiring faults are the most common issue we see when we have a car on the dyno. Fortunately most of the normal faults we come across are relatively common and easy to diagnose. In this webinar we’ll look at some basic diagnostic techniques that you can perform with simple tools.
