Booting Preparation

04.49

00:00 - The booting preparation process is the one of pre cutting and installing all our sections of dual wall adhesive that we're then going to install onto our harness sections which will get recovered onto the end of those harness sections, sealing them to the wires or the connector, if the connector is compatible with a booting operation.
00:18 Now it might seem slightly backwards that we're actually going to pre cut these sections of dual wall adhesive tubing and get them installed onto the harness before we undertake the labelling and pinning processes, however once we begin undertaking those processes, it is highly likely that we're actually going to lose access to the part of the harness that we really want to install that boot onto.
00:40 The connector bodies are often quite large and we're not going to be able to get our sections of raychem SCL into place over the connector bodies.
00:48 So we do want to get them pre cut and installed onto the harness now, that way we know we'll be able to slide them back up once the pinning process has been completed.
00:57 The process of determining the size of dual wall adhesive tubing we're going to use is very similar to the one we went through when we were determining the size of DR25 we sheathed the harness with.
01:08 We're going to measure the diameter of the harness section and we're going to use that measurement to determine the size of that dual wall adhesive tubing that we're going to use.
01:17 In this instance we are going to use our raychem SCL again as for this harness none of the connectors are actually compatible with a booting operation.
01:24 So we are going to be booting at the end of our harness sections here, directly onto the wires and SCL is a really good choice for that.
01:32 The main difference between sizing that SCL and the DR25 that we've used for the sheathing operation is when we decided on the size for our DR25, we went with the largest possible unrecovered diameter of DR25 that would still recover to tightly fit our harness section.
01:50 For our SCL we're actually going to reverse that rule and we're going to use the smallest possible size that we can get into place and manipulate to be our boot.
02:01 We use this smallest possible size as that means as it recovers it is going to grip the section of the harness as tight as possible and it's gonna give us a really good bond between the inner wall potting compound and our DR25.
02:14 The rest of the procedure is actually very very similar to what we've done with our harness transition point.
02:19 We are going to abrade the end of our DR25 here and then clean it with some isopropyl alcohol as that is going to allow the potting compound on that SCL to really adhere nicely to the DR25 and make sure we've got a good bond there.
02:33 Now using our gearbox sub harness branch here as an example, we're just going to measure the outer diameter including our DR25 sheathing here and from a couple of directions we're bringing up approximately seven millimetres.
02:47 Now the closest size of SCL that is gonna tightly recover onto that and that we're still gonna be able to manipulate onto that branch is gonna be 3/8 or 10 millimetre.
02:57 So I'm gonna go ahead and cut a section of that now.
03:00 I've got my 3/8 inch or 10 millimetre raychem SCL here and we're going to have to cut off a section to use as our booting medium.
03:08 Which does of course bring us to the point of how long should we make this section? I have a rule of thumb that I use here and I will double the diameter of our SCL, and I will curt that length off.
03:19 So in this instance using our 10 millimetre SCL I'm going to cut a 20 millimetre section off.
03:25 What it's going to do is give your harness a really nice professional appearance, when all those pieces of SCL are then recovered into place.
03:32 So I'll go ahead and I'm going to cut my 20 millimetre section of our 3/8 or 10 millimetre raychem SCL now.
03:47 Now I have actually cut a few sections of our 3/8 inch SCL there, as I know for a harness like this, we are going to be using a lot of that 3/8 inch SCL for the booting operation.
03:57 I'm gonna get that on our gearbox sub harness section now and that is simply going to sit in place while we complete the upcoming labelling and pinning operations at which point we're then going to recover it and give us a nice boot at the end of our harness section here.
04:14 So once again, this might seem like we're doing things slightly backwards.
04:17 However if we were to recover this section of SCL into place and use it as a boot now, the extra wall thickness it would add to the end of our harness section here would actually make getting our labelling materials into place reasonably tricky.
04:33 So instead what we're going to do is slide it up the harness, we're going to leave it in place there, and we're actually going to complete our labelling and our pinning operations and then we're going to slide it back down the harness, recovering it into position.
