Hi, I'm currently forging a VR38DETT it will be pushed to 1000bhp with supporting modifications like GT30 660, big intercooler, fuel pumps, injectors etc.....

I have the main bearing clearance at 0.0023 thu which I think is ok. But I have got 0.0030 Thu on the rods ! would this be ok? Thank you so much for your help. Much appreciated.

I'm not very familiar with the VR38, but a good rule of thumb is this: .001 of oil clearance per 1 inch of journal diameter. So if your journal diameter is 2.5 inches, .0025 of oil clearance would be acceptable. Of course if you can find the specs from the manufacturer in the service manual, that would be the best. Since you plan on making some good power, I would lean towards the looser end of the bearing spec.

If you find that your clearances are to large, you can always run an undersized bearing shell on one side to Tighten it up.

Hi Michael, thsnk you for your reply.

The main bearings clearance for the vr38 as is (0.0014 to 0.0018 thu) limit 0.0026 thu

For the rods is (0.0022 - 0.0027 standard) limit 0.0035 thu

it says what is says, but just want to have a peace of mind if I’m good at 0.0030 or I will just swap bearings?
