Dear HP Members

I'm looking to pare down my ford puma 1.7 hillclimb car wiring loom to save weight and tidy up the dashboard .

Are the small gauge wires from the GEM to fuses / relays / ecu / sensors etc ... set at a specific length to give a specific resistance , ie: can they be shortened by at least a half and not cause any issues ?

Plus , for ease I wanted to use Jelly Bean type connectors as see in the telecoms industry , yes / no ?

See ... https://cpc.farnell.com/kauden/lj8b1/8b-jelly-crimp-3-way-clear-250pk/dp/CN20484?st=jelly%20crimp%20connectors

Any help greatfully received , have already taken 3+kg of wiring so far and at least another 3-4kg could go .

The larger power cables I will cut and re-crimp at fuse box junctions .

Thanks

Greg R

Been a long time since I've seen those, the lines guys used those back in the Post Office days, a little surprised they're still used but I guess for that application, they're still the way to go.

I said "that application" because they're NOT the way to go for a vehicle that has has a lot of vibration, carries (usually) a lot more current, and uses multi-stand wire - not to mention, IIRC (it's been over 35 years), they're for a specific gauge of solid wire.

Going back to the original question, no, you shouldn't have any issues as long as you do the shortening correctly. Best way is probably to buy new connectors, or de-pin the current connectors/terminations, and use new pins on the shortened wires. Take short-cuts or use those things above, and you're asking for all sorts of problems and intermittent faults.

Many thanks Gord 👍
