So I want to try and test my knowledge before tunning a real car with the potential of breaking it. Is there any simulator or something similar to tune different engines?
CAR TUNE on steam is definitely worth it, it is $20AUD but its a great game to test different tuning on custom engines, as well as the engine building side of things.
Hey. I'm pretty new to tuning as well but I managed to successfully tune my car (k24) on the dyno to meet my power goal.
I would say the best way to learn is to practice it. The only way you can hurt your engine is if you make it knock or add boost without taking the correct measures first. You should be able to mess around with it relatively safely in the lower load and rpm zones. Obviously, this may be different between engines. Invest in an audio knock detection system as well for added safety. If you can, find someone in your area that has knowledge about tuning. Look for some speed shops or shops that have a dyno. I am grateful that the shop I was going to dyno tune at was also willing to give me some pointers as they had more experience than I did.
And if you are unsure, you can always ask here.
Best of luck.
