Knock sensing while tining

While tuning an knock detection capable ECM that has scope capabilities on the software, would you use an external knock box and then transfer the frequency information to the ECM or just start in the ECM software and forego a knock box?

You really need to use audio knock detection as a standalone knock detection system to validate the system is properly capable of detecting knock.
