There are some guidelines for position, orientation, and charge temperatures available, if you have a specific application?
I'm looking for some guidelines to help me choose the right injector for a certain application. I've found several products with various spray patterns. Let's keep DOHC injectors with two streams aside for this moment, as I have 2-valve cylinder head. There are variants with pencil beam spray pattern, such as Siemens Deka or old Bosch EV1 on one side of the spectrum and modern injectors usually based on Bosch EV-14 with wide beam spray pattern on the other side. Most of the tuners say, they have excelent atomisation of the fuel, compared to those old injectors, which just squirt a stream of fuel on the back side of a valve.
I assume, that fuel atomisation is essential, but I also see a potential risk of wall wetting.
The reality is that we have little control over spray pattern when selecting aftermarket injectors. While the OE manufacturer may go to considerable lengths to tailor the spray pattern to suit the intake port shape, if you want an injector that's 50% larger, you're going to be almost certainly trading off some of the spray pattern with the ability to get the fuel you need into the engine. That being said, while spray pattern is likely to have some impact on the emissions, it's not as big of a deal as perhaps most may think. Most people think that injecting fuel when the intake valve is open is the key to performance. the reality though is that it's pretty common for most OEs to use a 'closed valve' injection timing to help vapourise the fuel off the hot port wall and inlet valves. A spray pattern that's not optimised for your intake port may likely result in an increased fuel puddle on the port wall which among other things will affect your required transient enrichment.
