Crank Balancing Gains
Summary
What gains do we get after having balanced the basic crank flywheel damper in the front? Is it really worth balancing the rods and pistons, will we gain let's say 100 RPM or what would the gain be if any? OK this one is actually a little bit hard to quantify because you're not actually going to see a performance gain in terms of improving the balance of your components. It's not going to allow you to pull another 100 RPM for example, that's not that simple.

00:20 | It's not going to allow you to pull another 100 RPM for example, that's not that simple. |
00:26 | You're not also going to see a power or torque improvement from this. |
00:29 | What you're going to end up with though is a smoother engine and that's going to end up paying dividends in terms of the life expectancy of the components, it'll just rev more cleanly, feel smoother and the knock on advantages there again, just life expectancy of all of our components are improved so definitely it is worth doing. |
00:51 | It does need to be considered though in terms of what are you actually trying to achieve with the engine? The accuracy of our balance of our components does become more critical the higher the RPM ceiling that we're intending to run so if you've got an engine that's only going to rev to maybe 4000, 4500 RPM, probably not that likely for a performance engine but just to give you an example. |
01:15 | The imbalance that would be tolerable there, probably very different to something that's going to rev to 10,000, 11,000, 12,000 RPM. |
