The ability to adjust camber and caster easily from the same location has its benefits. Petter Solberg's PSRX rallycross Citroen has a simple solution to incorporate both camber and caster adjustment in the shock top mount.
This design is known as a 2-way pillow ball top mount and is great if you have limited, or no adjustment on the rest of your suspension components. OEM adjustment for camber and caster is normally done in the lower control arm and/or hub via an eccentric bolt. Eccentric bolts provide for very little adjustment and are primarily to keep the alignment within the manufacturer’s specifications. The usual aftermarket option for a macpherson strut is to add an adjustable strut top. Typically these are slotted and used to allow fast and accurate camber adjustment. By turning the strut top through 90 degrees, the slots can be used to provide caster adjustment instead. In this case, Petter has redesigned and reinforced the strut tower to handle the abuse of rallycross. At the same time, it’s been slotted on both axes to allow caster and camber adjustment from the one location. Quick and easy setup changes can be made to suit different tracks without needing to lift the car in the air.
