Getting consistent 60-foot launch times is critical if you want any kind of result when it comes to drag racing, and for teams running a slider style clutch fitting a wastegate to their charge pipe, instead of the hot side, is not an uncommon way to help ensure this.
The goal here is to launch with exactly the same chosen RPM and boost pressure, and while retarding or cutting ignition timing can achieve the same result it causes spikes in boost pressure, whereas placing a wastegate on the charge pipe allows you to set a boost target and have any excess bled off as required until the car has launched.
