Practical MIG Welding: Eye Protection
Eye Protection
02.05
| 00:00 | While the welding mask is a hugely important part of the welding process, it's not the only form of eye protection we need on hand. |
| 00:06 | In the fabrication environment, we're dealing with a lot of different processes in and around welding and there's a lot to go wrong so we need to make sure that our eyes are well protected. |
| 00:16 | There are a number of ways we can protect our eyes from debris and the best option is really going to depend on the operation we're performing and what level of protection we need. |
| 00:25 | In a typical fabrication environment, we usually see three methods of eye protection. |
| 00:29 | The first is safety glasses. |
| 00:32 | These come in many different styles and the selection is entirely up to your personal preference. |
| 00:37 | What is important though is that they fit well and they protect your eyes. |
| 00:41 | In particular, you want a pair that provides a close fit around your cheeks to minimise the chance of material entering between your face and the glasses. |
| 00:49 | The second option, and the most effective, is the full coverage goggles that offer a tight fitment to your face. |
| 00:56 | These goggles offer the eye complete protection from dust and sparks and are perfect for cutting, grinding or working overhead. |
| 01:03 | While the protection they offer is much better than a simple pair of safety glasses, they can be less comfortable over longer periods. |
| 01:09 | The third option and one that can be used in conjunction with either goggles or glasses is the full face mask. |
| 01:16 | This is particularly handy when cutting large sections that may spray sparks or debris, such as heavy weld removal or cutting. |
| 01:22 | It's a good idea to have our eye protection located in the areas we'll need it the most and have a few pairs hanging in multiple locations around the workshop or garage. |
| 01:31 | The closer we have our eye protection to us, the less likely we'll be to go without it, and it really isn't worth taking the chance. |
| 01:39 | All it takes is a simple speck of metal dust in your eye and you'll be downing tools and heading for the closest hospital. |
| 01:45 | So, to reiterate, there are 3 main types of eye protection, glasses, goggles and a mask. |
| 01:50 | It's a good idea to have all 3 on hand and to ensure that you're using them at all times. |
| 01:56 | This is a lesson you can either learn the hard way or the easy way, it's up to you. |
