Step 1: Read ECU

02.10

00:00 - In this section of the course, we're going to cover a simple six step process you can apply to finding and defining maps in your ECU using WinOLS.
00:08 We know that even after going through this course, it can still be a little daunting when it comes time to put this knowledge to use for the first time.
00:16 By breaking this process down into bite sized steps, each individual step is relatively quick and easy to complete and this ensures that you don't overlook anything critical that could waste time or even damage your ECU or your engine.
00:30 This section will now go into each of the steps in too much detail since everything you'll need to do here has been covered in detail elsewhere within the practical skills section of the course.
00:40 Instead, we'll explain what you'll need to do at a high level and if you want more detail, you can check back to the relevant section for more detailed information.
00:50 Now that we know what to expect, we can get started with the first step which is to perform a full read from your ECU.
00:56 While it can be tempting to perform an OBD2 read on ECUs where this is possible, for speed and simplicity, it is preferrable to take the time to remove the ECU and perform a full bench read at least the first time.
01:10 Doing this does take a little more effort in terms of locating and removing the ECU but this full read can save you if something goes wrong further down the line and you end up with an unresponsive or bricked ECU.
01:22 I know that many will ignore this advice and read via OBD2 instead and if you're going to go down this route then it's important to ensure the vehicle's battery is well charged and it also can be beneficial to connect a battery charger to the vehicle while the read is being completed to maintain sufficient voltage to the ECU.
01:41 Low battery voltage is one of the more common causes of a bricked ECU.
01:46 Likewise it's important to make sure that your laptop is sufficiently charged or preferably plugged into mains power to prevent it from going flat mid read.
01:54 Once the read is complete, you're going to want to save the binary file with a suitable name so that it's going to be easy to locate and recognise.
02:02 With the read complete, we're now ready to move onto the second step of our process.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
