Hi Everyone,

Noob here, please bear with me.

Just fitted an K&N Filter on my 1.8 TDCi van. Given that this engine is MAF based, I assume the sensor just measures more airflow and passes that info the ECM so that it adjusts the A/F ratio. Correct? or do I need to do a MAF calibration? If so, whats the course of action? the same as a petrol engine? compare the measured to desired?

You're thinking about it the right way.

Whether it's a petrol or diesel engine, the principle is the same. The MAF sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine and reports that information back to the ECU. The ECU then uses that data when calculating fuel delivery.

In most cases, simply fitting an aftermarket air filter won't require any MAF recalibration. As long as the MAF sensor and housing remain unchanged, the ECU should continue to measure airflow correctly and compensate accordingly.

MAF recalibration generally only becomes necessary if the characteristics around the sensor change significantly, for example changing the MAF housing diameter, relocating the sensor, or making major intake modifications.

So for a typical filter upgrade, I'd expect the factory calibration to cope just fine, regardless of whether the engine is petrol or diesel.
