Working on my second build, just got around to inspecting the 3 angle valve job I had done to my head.

This is a 5 valve 1.8t AEB head, on the outer valves it looks like they took material out. This is the first time I've had a valve job done, maybe this is "de-shrouding"? I took a close up of the cuts, they all have a sharp edge, I'm thinking I want to at least take a soft metal burr and smooth that out to prevent hot spots in the combustion chamber?

Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

You are absolutely right in both things - a) it's deshrouding and b) you better off make a smooth transition to avoid hot spots in combination chamber.

It's down to the "machinist*" not using the correct size tool for the top cut - it's too big and has cut into the side of the chamber. Before going any further I'd first place a head gasket on the head and check to make sure it hasn't removed material from the 'fire ring" area - this is the raised 'bead' around the gasket that seals against the head. It's rather unlikely to be an issue, but if it is you can expect the head gasket to fail.

There may be a very slight "unshrouding" affect, but in practice it's way too high to actually consider it as an actual benefit - and probably offset more by the slight reduction in compression, which will be further compromised by the material removal to remove the sharp edges.

* If that's the work they do, I might give serious thought to going elsewhere.

Appreciate both of you taking a look, I'll verify the gasket first thing. This build is 81mm -> 83mm overbore so hopefully the larger head gasket is well clear of this if they did pull material away from the fire ring area.

I'll post pics of the gasket and smoothed edges when I get it done. Getting any machinist to touch VWAG heads near me is a challenge, nobody wants to work on anything besides Ford/Chevy stuff here.

I'm also using a longer stroke crank from a 2.0FSI and Diamond 9.5:1 stroker pistons with a peak boost target of 20psi. A little bit of CR reduction won't be the end of the world I'm thinking.

As an engine machinist myself I would like to see the machinist blend this better to the chamber.

It would take them very little time and save you the hassle and time.

I forgot to follow up, I was able to blend them myself and the gasket is well clear. Project is on hold with backordered springs at the moment but thanks again for the replies!
